Apprenticeship is the time-tested method of training construction workers that combines on-the-job-training with classroom instruction – and there is no better apprenticeship method than the union apprenticeship administered by the Charlotte Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee.

The Life of an Electrician

Electricians – or inside wiremen – and communications technicians can work on a variety of construction projects, including new construction, remodeling, maintenance and repair. In any situation, the work of an electrician can be both physically and mentally demanding and require him or her to be involved in many different types of jobs presenting many new and different challenges.

Much of the work of an electrician involves installation, assembling, testing, repairing, layout, and design of electrical wiring, fixtures, and apparatus used for power, light, heating, air conditioning, and many types of control systems. Many jobs now incorporate computer and fiber optics.

Electrician’s work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all temperatures, weather, and environmental conditions, and can require requires considerable physical effort for lifting, carrying materials and tools, and climbing ladders and scaffolds.

The Charlotte Electrical J.A.T.C. Program

The C.E.J.A.T.C. apprenticeship program is a 5-year curriculum, registered with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, that includes the study of electrical theory, the National Electrical Code and OSHA safety regulations, as well as hands-on training for blueprint reading, field wiring, lighting installation, transformers and motor controls.

Apprentices are required to complete extensive classroom training and 8,000 hours of field training, and they must pass the Charlotte-Mecklenburg journeyman electrician’s licensing exam.

The C.E.J.A.T.C. also works with Central Piedmont Community College to include additional classes in our program that allow apprentices to earn a two-year associates Degree in Electronics Technology.

In order to enter the Charlotte Electrical J.A.T.C. apprenticeship program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Selection into the program also is based on oral interviews.
